2025 MotorTrend Truck of the Year: The contenders
2025 MotorTrend Truck of the Year: The contenders
Now that we’ve revealed the 2025 MotorTrend Car and SUV of the Year winners, it’s the period for our top truck of 2025 to get its due as well.
This year’s Truck of the Year field is one of the most diverse in recent recollection, with offerings from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Toyota, Tesla, Ram, Rivian and even Mercedes-Benz, propelled by a wide array of powertrains. The throng also included the Tesla Cybertruck, one of most controversial and talked-about trucks in recent recollection. There were several other EV trucks in attendance on this year’s roster as well, from both established automakers and relative upstarts such as Rivian.
As always, our Of The Year contests don’t function the same as our traditional comparison tests, which pit two or more vehicles against each other under specific circumstances; instead, each vehicle at any of our OTY competitions faces off against our six key criteria in an attempt to claim the coveted Golden Calipers. Read on to view the alphabetized list of contenders that competed for the title of 2025 MotorTrend Truck of the Year.
2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV
Chevrolet’s Silverado EV RST hit the scene with some impressive numbers — 440 miles of range, a jumbo 205-kWh battery, blazin’ quick DC charging and dual motors sending 754 horses and 785 lb-ft to a set of 24-inch wheels. Unlike the Ford F-150 Lightning, this truck is not merely an electrified Silverado but an EV built from the ground up using GM’s Ultium battery architecture. The Silverado EV further shows off with four-wheel steering, a four-corner air suspension and a folding midgate that will have you nostalgically whispering “Avalanche.” Head here for the packed 2025 Chevrolet Silverado EV TOTY review.

2024 Ford Ranger
The all-recent 2024 Ford Ranger has a leg up on other 2025 MotorTrend Truck of the Year entrants, the XLT version having already taken down the 2024 TOTY champ, Chevrolet’s Colorado (along with another TOTY ’25 entrant, the Toyota Tacoma) in a comparison test. But the 2023 UAW strike kept the Ranger out of last year’s competition, and we thought this handsome midsize pickup truck deserved an orderly shot at the title. 2024 GMC Sierra EV
Back in 2022 GMC’s over-the-top Hummer EV stole the display and nearly snagged the coveted title of Truck of the Year. Few production trucks have ever shown up with such a large presence and with as much drama as the Hummer EV. It was simply an unforgettable encounter. Cue the business’s second act: the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. Head here for the packed 2024 GMC Sierra TOTY review.

2025 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
When it comes to Truck of the Year, people generally ponder of… trucks. But packed-size vans can propose the same utility and more. And thus our competition included the 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter 2500 cargo van — a compelling electric alternative for businesses looking for a cleaner fleet — and the updated diesel-powered 2025 Sprinter 2500.
Among more exciting entrants vying for the Golden Calipers, such as the baja-ready 2025 Ram 1500 RHO or the apocalyptic 2024 Tesla Cybertruck, a couple of German cargo boxes might seem bland and destined to watch this competition from the sidelines. However, after hauling and off-roading them with the rest of the crew, it’s obvious the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter isn’t just for the nine-to-five or nomadic “#vanlife” YouTubers. For example, the AWD diesel offered shockingly precise and responsive steering, and even with its 170-inch wheelbase, the eSprinter felt reasonably nimble. 2025 Ram 1500
The Ram 1500 pickup is a two-period winner of MotorTrend’s Truck of the Year award, and the nameplate is back with a diverse model lineup, a recent turbocharged straight-six engine and more tech than ever before.
There are 10 models of Ram 1500 available today — with a $47,000 worth difference between the top and bottom of the range. Of these trucks, the Ram 1500 Warlock, RHO and Tungsten all vied for this year’s Golden Calipers. Of those 10 variants, four can be had in two-wheel drive, six only arrive in 4×4 guise, and the Ram 2500 Tradesman HFE only offers rear-wheel drive, a 6-foot, 4-inch box, and the 3.6-liter V-6. 2025 Rivian R1T
We fell challenging for the Rivian R1T in 2022, traversing the TransAmerica trail in a pair of pre-prototypes loaded for overlanding. Not long after that exercise, it earned our Truck of the Year Calipers. Three years later, Rivian is rolling out its second-production R1T, which features three all-recent Rivian-designed powertrains, a thoroughly retuned suspension, and a revolutionary recent zonal electric architecture credited with slashing weight, cabling and response times for all onboard systems. 2024 Tesla Cybertruck
While some — OK, many, or maybe most — might view the Tesla Cybertruck as silly act art, others might rationalize its uncompromising adherence to Tesla’s jaw-dropping stealth-bomber-refrigerator design theme and tech-forward brand. But can something so obviously designed without any guardrails achieve when hemmed in by our Truck of the Year criteria? Somehow, yes.
Its advancement in design merits are out of the galaxy. adore it or despise it, the Cybertruck looks unlike any other pickup on sale today. Head here for the packed 2024 Tesla Cybertruck TOTY review.
2024 Toyota Tacoma
Two decades have passed since Toyota’s Tacoma molted out of its compact pickup truck skin and ushered in what we now recognize as the midsize pickup. The year was 2005, and that metamorphosis resulted in a lot of hardware during award period, including our very own Truck of the Year Golden Calipers. Now entering its fourth production with the first ground-up redesign since that 2005 truck, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma gets another shot at the crown.
