The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has expanded a baby powder recall alert over feasible asbestos contamination.
In the initial recall posted on Sept. 19, Dynarex Corporation recalled 62 cases of its Dynacare Baby Powder. The recall was upgraded on Monday to include 1,020 cases of the medical equipment manufacturer’s baby powder products, which were distributed to 35 states − up from 12 states in the September alert.
Asbestos is a natural mineral that is a carcinogen, the FDA recall alert said. A carcinogen is something that can factor cancer.
Asbestos can be found near talc, an ingredient in many cosmetic products, the government agency said.
“If talc mining sites are not carefully chosen or if proper steps are not taken to adequately purify the talc ore, it may contain asbestos,” the FDA alert said.
What prompted the recall?
“The recall was the outcome of a schedule sampling program by the FDA, which revealed that the finished products contained asbestos,” Dynarex Corporation said in the recall alert. “Upon further investigation, we have identified additional lots of products that may contain asbestos due to using the same bulk talc material.”
In addition, the corporation said it has stopped the distribution of the products and are investigating to determine what caused the contamination of the talc.
Dynarex Corporation said there have been no illnesses or adverse reactions reported.
