Gardners Candies’ Cappuccino Meltaway Bars recalled due to ‘undeclared tree nuts’

Undeclared cashews are why Gardners Candies’ Cappuccino Meltaway Bars are being recalled, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Gardners Candies, which is headquartered in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, announced the recall of its 1.25-ounce (35g) packaged candy bars because “they may contain undeclared tree nuts (cashews),” according to the FDA’s information release.
“People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to tree nuts run the hazard of solemn or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the FDA said.
No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recall, the FDA said. The recall was initiated after the candy bars were distributed in packaging that did not disclose that they contained tree nuts, the agency said, adding that a subsequent investigation indicated the issue was due to a “temporary breakdown in the business’s production and packaging processes.”

How to identify the recalled Cappuccino Meltaway Bars?
The recalled candy bars were distributed nationwide beginning on Sept. 1 via retail stores and through mail orders via Gardners Candies’ official website, according to the FDA. The candy bars’ packages are marked with lot #082725 stamped along the side, and this number correlates with the expiration date of Aug. 27, 2025, the federal agency said.
The product can also be found in Gardners Meltaway Treat Boxes marked with lot # 101625 or 112525, the FDA said. Each Meltaway Treat Box includes two Cappuccino Meltaway Bars along with other flavors of bars packaged together in a generic holiday box, according to the agency.
Production of the candy bars has been suspended until Gardners Candies is “sure that the issue has been corrected,” according to the FDA.
What should consumers do with their Cappuccino Meltaway Bars?
The FDA is urging those who have bought 1.25-ounce packages of Cappuccino Meltaway Bars or Meltaway Treat Boxes to call the Gardners Candies corporate office for a replacement.
According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), around .5% to 1% of the U.S. population is allergic to tree nuts, which includes almonds, brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios and walnuts.
“Reactions to tree nuts can be severe, including life-threatening anaphylaxis, and individuals with a tree nut allergy should have epinephrine available at all times,” AAAAI said.
