Kohl’s to close 27 ‘underperforming’ stores by April. Here’s the list

Kohl’s plans to close 27 of its underperforming stores by April 2025 as part of the struggling retailer’s transformation procedure.
The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-headquartered business – pressured by declining sales – said that all employees at the closing stores “have been informed, and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s,” according to a Jan. 9 press release.
“While Kohl’s continues to depend in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the business said.
Also closing: an e-commerce fulfillment center in San Bernardino, California, in operation since 2010, shuttering in May 2025. The business can now fulfill customer orders from store locations, without the fulfillment center, Kohl’s said.
“We always receive these decisions very seriously,” said CEO Tom Kingsbury, who will step down as CEO on Jan. 15. “As we continue to construct on our long-term growth schedule, it is significant that we also receive challenging but essential actions to back the health and upcoming of our business for our customers and our teams.”
Ashley Buchanan, formerly CEO of Michaels Companies, will receive over as Kohl’s CEO on Jan. 15. Kingsbury will remain on as an advisor and serve on the business’s board through his retirement fund in May 2025.
Kohl’s said in November 2024 it expects 2024 sales to be down 7% to 8%. The retailer reports its packed-year sales in February.
