Macy’s lists 66 ‘underproductive’ stores set for closure; over 80 closures still to arrive
Macy’s released a list of 66 of the stores it is closing, with locations including Arizona, California, Florida and recent York. The retailer plans to close about 150 in its revitalization schedule.
Macy’s has announced named 66 of the 150 stores that it’s planning to close as part of its revitalization schedule.
The retailer announced back in February 2024 plans to shut down 150 “underproductive” Macy’s store locations by 2026. The schedule “is designed to gain the corporation to sustainable, profitable sales growth,’ Macy’s said in a press release Thursday.
Macy’s still plans to close a total of about 150 underproductive stores, while investing in its 350 current Macy’s locations, through the corporation’s 2026 financial year, which ends Jan. 30, 2027, the corporation said in the press release.
“Closing any store is never straightforward, but as part of our Bold recent Chapter schedule, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our leave–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” Macy’s CEO and chairman Tony Spring said in a statement.
The corporation previously said it also plans to open about 15 recent Bloomingdale’s stores and at least 30 recent Bluemercury stores – and remodel about 30 Bluemercury stores, too.
Overall sales for Macy’s declined 2.4% to $4.7 billion, during the third quarter, which ended Nov. 2, 2024.
But sales at Macy’s First 50 locations, where the corporation is focusing its revitalization efforts, rose 1.9%, marking a third consecutive quarter of sales growth, the corporation said. Sales at Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury showed increased sales, too, compared to a year ago.
